ABOUT LADAKH
Ladakh is a high altitude mountain region lying between the Karakoram and the Great Himalayan ranges, and is often described as Moonland Ladakh on account of its unique lunar landscape. For close to a millennium, this region was an independent mountain kingdom of great strategic importance. Leh, the historical capital, was a major crossroads of Asian trade and migration routes. For centuries, Silk Route caravans and committed pilgrims passed through this crossroads between India, Tibet and Chinese Turkistan, leaving behind a rich heritage of cultural and artistic traditions. Shielded by high mountain ramparts, Ladakh remains to-date an unspoiled enclave of Tibetan Buddhism, which is practiced in the more than 39 monasteries that dot the landscape. These monasteries contain a wealth of exquisite murals, gilded statues, religious icons, scrolls etc. Here it is possible to receive a Lama?s blessings, consult an astrologer about your future, hear the wail of a horn echoing from the mountain walls, and witness a lifestyle passed down through the ages.
Ladakh is also an adventure lover?s dream come true. Its mountainous landscape offers endless options for adventure activities. For climbers, there are dozens of Himalayan peaks. The Indus & Zanskar river systems provide ideal sites for white water rafting. For the trekking enthusiasts, there are many routes and options, ranging from day-return treks to month-long trans-mountain traverses.
